Essentials of Dementia Care
– Orientation on Dementia
– Managing Changing Behaviour
– Effective Communication
Participants will learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of dementia; how dementia causes changes in the behaviour of a person and ways to manage these behaviours; and techniques to communicate with the person dementia effectively. 8 Apr 2017

LEVEL 1 ELECTIVES
Sessions are conducted from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
MODULE SYNOPSIS DATES
Elective 1: Everyday Care Participants will gain a better understanding of the impact of dementia on Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and learn tips on assisting persons with dementia with their ADLs through the Prepare, Involve & Comfort (PIC) model. 19 Aug 2017
Elective 2: Meaningful Activities Participants will learn to identify and conduct suitable activities for persons with dementia. 9 Sep 2017
Elective 3: Fall Prevention Participants will learn about factors causing falls, fall prevention and correct techniques of assisting someone who has had a fall. 4 Nov 2017
Elective 4: Managing Mealtimes Participants will comprehend the mechanics of swallowing, how dementia can impact swallowing, and ways to manage food refusal in persons with dementia. 18 Nov 2017
Elective 5: Creating a Comfortable and Safe Environment Participants will learn home safety considerations for persons with dementia as well as practical tips to provide a safe environment. 2 Dec 2017
Elective 6: Managing Food Nutrition Participants will comprehend the nutritional needs of persons with dementia, strategies to overcome undereating or over-eating and the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. 3 Deb 2018
Elective 7: Self-care Participants will learn how to manage their emotions and cope with stress by discussing their roles and job xpectations as a caregiver. 3 Mar 2018


LEVEL 2 ELECTIVES
Sessions are conducted from 9am to 1pm.
MODULE SYNOPSIS DATES
Elective 1: Engaging a Person with Dementia in Meaningful Activities Participants will learn to recognise the activity needs of a person with dementia and engage him/her in meaningful activities in their daily routine. 6 May 2017
Elective 2: Assisting a Person with Dementia through Safe Transfer and Ambulation Participants will learn how to assist a person with dementia with walking and transferring to prevent injury for both the person with dementia and caregiver. 3 Jun 2017
Elective 3: Applying Basic First Aid for a Person with Dementia at Home Participants will learn to treat cuts, assist with choking, and handle the person with dementia with possible fractures. 5 Aug 2017
